No Pai Lian
for 7 percussionists up to 14 or 21 or 28, at least 7.
Duration: about 2-3 minutes
This piece is a short and playful work for at least 7 players, but it can easily be doubled or tripled.
I wrote it in Beijing at the Eden Festival as a surprise encore together with teachers from various conservatories across China.
The title No Pai Lian means No Rehearsal in Chinese. It was a little inside joke: all week I kept hearing people say “I have rehearsal” – sometimes even until 4 in the morning! Such passion! You can shout the title in Chinese, or in your own language – up to you.
The second part of the piece is based on a game my colleagues taught me at night, when we were winding down after long days of teaching. In Chinese, you count up to 7 – but you never say the number 7. You can do this in your own language too. The rule is simple: skip every number related to 7 (7, 14, 17, 21, etc.), and only say the rest, one by one. Try it once with a group of friends – it’s harder (and funnier) than you think!
Have fun!
